There are six driving ranges in Phuket, the latest one to open was the Talang Driving Range in the centre of the island near the Herroine Monument on the road to Mission Hills Golf Club. Its quite an impressive little set up and will be one of the best on the island if they get some new practice balls, which i am told are on the way.
By far the best range on the island is the Phunaka Golf Academy in the south of the island near Chalong. The most spectacular 330 yards 56 bay driving range is designed to simulate real golf course play that covers everything from short chip to the full drive. Phunaka has three teaching professionals, one English, one Thai and one Japanese and they have teaching programmes to suit everyone including children. Also Phunaka has a 9 hole golf course which is not too busy and an ideal place to play a few holes after your lesson.
The oldest range on the island is the Phuket Country Club one which has two tiers and a small chipping and putting green. The quality of the balls are not very good and at 80 baht for 50 balls is also the most expensive. Great Thai food served in the restaurant.
The Laguna Driving Range is run by an English Teaching professional called Martin Platts, the self styled golf guru and has an excellent reputation as one of the best teachers on the island.
The Laguna Golf Course has its own golf school and academy which mainly caters to the upmarket clients staying at the 5 star hotels on the Laguna complex. There is just one problem with the range, and its not long enough to practice your woods so the maximum distance is around 200 yards.
And finally the Mountain View Driving Range is located between Phuket Town and Chalong but is in poor condition with poor quality golf balls and very hard mats and in all honesty is not worth a visit.
